Story
Chapter 1: Southbrook
The Monday morning rain pounds against the bus windows as thirteen-year-old Jayden Cross stares outside.
Grey skies.
Grey buildings.
Grey streets.
The same route he's taken his entire life.
His neighborhood has a reputation.
People outside call it rough.
People inside just call it home.
Jayden sits at the back of the bus, headphones on, football highlights playing on his cracked phone screen.
A message pops up.
Tyrell: "Don't be late today bro. Coach said fitness training."
Jayden: "Tell coach to do fitness himself."
Three laughing emojis immediately appear.
By the time he reaches school, his mates are already waiting.
Ethan.
Tyrell.
Mason.
The same group that's been together since primary school.
Every teacher knows them.
Not because they're troublemakers.
But because they're inseparable.
The school day drags.
Maths.
English.
Science.
Jayden spends most lessons doodling football formations in his notebook.
His dream isn't some secret.
Everyone knows.
If you ask him what he wants to be when he grows up he'll answer before you've finished the question.
A footballer.
No hesitation.
No backup plan.
A footballer.
After school the four boys head straight for the cage.
The local football pitch surrounded by wire fencing.
Their second home.
Older boys are already there.
The usual arguments break out.
"That was out!"
"No it wasn't!"
"Are you blind?"
Football.
Every day.
Until sunset.
Sometimes longer.
Later that night Jayden walks up the stairs to his flat.
The smell of cheap instant noodles fills the hall.
His younger sister, Lily, is sitting at the kitchen table doing homework.
"How was school?" she asks.
"Boring."
"How was football?"
"Good."
"That's literally what you say every day."
Jayden laughs.
Their mum won't be home for another hour.
Late shift again.
Normal.
Jayden throws together dinner and helps Lily with a maths question he barely understands himself.
Around 9 PM the front door finally opens.
His mother looks exhausted.
She drops her bag beside the sofa.
"You do your homework?"
"Yeah."
"You lying?"
"Nah."
"You definitely lying."
For a few minutes they sit together watching TV.
Nothing special.
Just another night.
The kind of night nobody remembers.
Chapter 2: The Draw
The next day the entire football team crowds around Tyrell's phone.
The cup draw has finally been released.
Everyone's excited.
Until Tyrell suddenly freezes.
"What?"
"Bro."
"What?"
Tyrell just turns his phone around.
Silence.
The fixture reads:
Southbrook Academy U14 vs PSV Eindhoven U14
Nobody reacts for a second.
Then the room explodes.
"No chance."
"PSV?!"
"THE PSV?!"
Even the coach looks surprised.
Most of the players have never played a professional academy before.
Some can't stop smiling.
Some look terrified.
The rest of training is useless.
Nobody can focus.
They're already thinking about the match.
That night Jayden can't sleep.
He lies in bed scrolling through videos.
PSV academy clips.
PSV first team highlights.
Champions League nights.
Packed stadiums.
Crowds singing.
Players walking onto the pitch while thousands cheer.
He imagines himself there.
Just for a second.
Wearing the shirt.
Hearing his name announced.
Playing under the lights.
Then reality kicks in.
He laughs and tosses the phone aside.
"Never happening."
Chapter 3: Match Day
The bus ride feels different.
Nobody's joking.
Nobody's shouting.
Everyone's nervous.
When they arrive, PSV are already warming up.
Immediately the difference is obvious.
Everything looks professional.
The passing.
The movement.
The organization.
Even their warm-up is sharper.
For the first time, Jayden realizes how far he is from the top level.
And for the first time...
He wants to know if he can reach it.
The game starts badly.
PSV dominate.
2-0 before halftime.
Southbrook can barely keep possession.
But they keep fighting.
Midway through the second half Ethan wins the ball and looks up.
A run.
One pass.
Perfect.
Jayden bursts through.
One touch.
Two.
BANG.
Top corner.
3-1.
The best goal he's ever scored.
The final whistle blows soon after.
They're out.
Cup over.
Dream over.
At least that's what everybody thinks.
Chapter 4: The Offer
As the players gather their bags, a man wearing a PSV tracksuit approaches.
"Jayden Cross?"
Jayden turns.
The scout smiles.
"We'd like to invite you to trials."
Jayden freezes.
Before he can answer, the scout continues.
"And Ethan Ward."
Ethan nearly drops his backpack.
"What?"
"We've been watching both of you."
The boys look at each other.
Neither knows what to say.
The scout hands them each a card.
Then leaves.
Just like that.
For the entire ride home they barely speak.
At first it feels unreal.
Exciting.
Impossible.
Then reality starts setting in.
That night Jayden sits at the kitchen table while his mother reads the invitation.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Finally she puts it down.
"It's an amazing opportunity."
Jayden doesn't answer.
His mum notices immediately.
"What's wrong?"
He shrugs.
"If I make it..."
His voice trails off.
"You'd have to move," she says quietly.
Jayden nods.
The excitement is suddenly gone.
Because now he isn't imagining football.
He's imagining leaving.
Leaving Lily.
Leaving Mum.
Leaving his friends.
Leaving the cage.
Leaving home.
Everything.
The dream suddenly feels terrifying.
Later, Ethan calls.
"You gonna do it?"
Jayden sits on the edge of his bed.
"I don't know."
"Bro it's PSV."
"I know."
"You always said you wanted this."
Jayden looks around his room.
The old posters.
The cracked FIFA cases.
The sounds from the street outside.
Everything familiar.
Everything home.
"I didn't think it would mean leaving."
For a few seconds neither speaks.
Then Ethan says:
"I'm scared too."
And somehow that's the most honest thing either of them has heard all day.
Because for the first time, football isn't just a dream.
It's a choice.
And both of them know that if they say yes...
their lives are never going to be the same again.
